Recognizing those WLHS XC runners who have the guts to leave it on the course! Athletes receive a ‘Mean Green’ t-shirt from the XC coaches for their accomplishments.
Our Boys’ cross country team finished 3rd in State backing up their State ranking and matching last year’s finish! Led by captain Cullen Wannarka’s second place finish, they fell just 11 points short of finishing second overall. Cullen’s finish is the highest in West Linn history. Closely behind was Taylor West in 5th place! Cullen finished just 2 seconds behind 2-time state champ Drew Jordan of North Medford. Taylor showed true guts as he passed a runner on the track in the last 100 meters. Continuing our exceptional team performance, Zach Boyd-Helm (25th) and Tim Donnelly (26th) had career best races. All the guys are juniors are will return next year for a sure to be stellar senior campaign. Sophomore Ellie Clow (87th in 21:22) may have had the best race on the Girls’ team. Qualifying as our 7th runner she almost ran her district time on the state course and was our number 3 runner!
With 43 of 53 runners setting seasonal PRs during the TRL District Meet, the entire Cross Country team made the Mean Green selection job very difficult for the coaches. After much discussion, the coaches gave out one t-shirt in every race including two in the Girls’ Varsity.Recognized for the Varsity Boys’ race was captain Cullen Wannarka. The junior is West Linn’s first individual District Champion since 1993. For the Varsity Girls’ race, Kathryn Flyte and Kelsey Guerins were selected. The senior captains have been real leaders all year. They stepped up and raced the race of their lives at a time when the team really needed it.Sophomore Braden Krellwitz pulled out a nice win in the Boys’ JV race with a great sprint at the end. A 31 second PR (18:01) in the process! In the Boys’ Varsity II race Will Maurer, junior, finished with a 27 sec PR and fine 4th place result. Sophomore Ellie Clow ran all by herself to move up to the Varsity for State with a win in 21:16. Her time is the best all-time at the TRL meet for the Girl’s JV. The biggest improvement of the day belonged to junior Marissa Solini with a 2:28 PR! She was rated 45th in the 51 person Varsity II race and finished 10th.
With a number of teammates out and the Oregon weather turning a traditionally fast course into a “mudder’s” course, these XC runners stood out at the Puma Classic. Junior Zach Boyd-Helm fell in the first mile but got back up and despite a hurt hip gamely ran a fine 17:03 to lead the Varsity Boys’ team. Check out the pictures in Media above. Louie Hogan, junior, lead our JV Boys’ with a personal PR at 5K in 19:03. Junior Elliot Prince passed the number two Lakeridge girl in the last 800m to help the Girls’ Varsity team win the dual meet with Lakeridge; the scoring went to the 6th runner! And freshman Sheridan Smith dropped her 5K time from 25:52 at the beginning of the season down to 22:49 to lead our JV Girls’ team.
Four athletes were selected by the coaches to bring home a Mean Green t-shirt from Bend. Running at elevation (about 3500 feet) is a challenge for Portland area runners; especially when they sit for over 3 hours on a school bus leading up to the race. Junior Erin Morrow ran a 25 second season PR with her best race of the year in the Oxford Classic. Freshman Rebecca Donnelly destroyed her personal PR by posting a 50 second 5K PR as our number one JV Girls’ runner. Andrew Daniels ran closer to our numbers 3-6 than ever with a solid effort. While Paden Bryck also set a 50 second PR at 5K as our number two JV Boys’ runner.
